Copyright law provides protection to authors i.e artists, writers, music composers etc for their original creations. These creations are called works. Creations/works covered by copy right include but are not limited to literary works such as novels, databases, newspapers, articles, films and TV programmes, musical compositions, choreography, artistic works such as paintings, software, short stories, screen plays, drawings, photographs, sculptures, architecture, maps and technical drawings.

Copy right holder of a particular work/creation has full right to reproduce, to perform works publically, to issue copies, to assign or license work, to prevent the making of the copies for sale or otherwise. Copyright is recognized worldwide under Berne convention.

By obtaining a copy right the authors of a work can use their works as they want to use. They can allow or prohibit following acts in relation to their works: Reproduction in various forms including printed publication or recording cassettes or compact discs etc, distribution, public performance, broad casting and communication to the public, Translation, adaptation etc. Term of a copy right last for life of author and 50 years after his death. This rule was established in Berne convention, which is shared by majority of countries. Once the term of copy right has expired, the work comes in the public domain.
